BT presses for immediate cut on termination fees to mobile operators
BT has petitioned for an immediate measure to cut the termination fees it pays for customers calling from landlines to mobiles.
The call was made at a competition appeals tribunal (CAT) as an interim measure, before a long-term judgement is made in the coming months.
BT has had to pay high fees to mobile operators for calls made from fixed-line phones to mobile operators, which it passes on as higher fees to its ?landline customers.
The request was made to the CAT ahead of an appeal by 3 in March, against all of its rival mobile operators, which are fiercely opposed to cutting termination fees.
3 has made termination fees one of four key regulatory battles in its campaign against what it sees as an uncompetitive and anti-consumer environment.
It is also campaigning for faster mobile number portability, cheaper roaming rates around Europe and spectrum re-farm.
