MWC: New manufacturer INQ wins GSMA Best Handset award

New manufacturer INQ has won the ‘best mobile handset or device’ 2009 GSMA Global Mobile Award for its first phone, the INQ1.

The INQ1 beat other ‘highly commended’ handsets such as T-Mobile and HTC’s G1, and the Nokia E71 to win the GSMA award, announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week.

INQ entered the market with the INQ1 exclusive to the 3 network in December 2008.

CEO of INQ Mobile Frank Meehan said: ‘We are proud of having introduced Social Mobile to the market and very honoured that our first device has received such recognition.’

The judges were impressed with the social networking aspects of the phone, saying: ‘Its approach to the deep integration of services, such as Facebook, outshines that of much costlier smartphones, and it presents a compelling proposition by treating the phonebook as the focal point of the device.’
Meehan said: ‘The way people communicate has evolved, but mass market devices have remained anchored to just voice and text.  INQ set out to change this.’
