Vodafone UK job cuts loom as operator attempts to save £1bn
Vodafone is expected to make job cuts in the UK tomorrow, as part of plans to save £1bn in costs.
The network is expected to make the announcement tomorrow (Tuesday 24 February), although some have alleged a statement could be made as early as today.
The company has 10,000 employees in the UK and 80,000 globally. The extent of the cuts is not known, but unions said job losses could be ‘significant’.
A spokesman for Connect, the union that represents workers in the communications industry, told the Times today: 'We are awaiting a formal announcement from the company but it does look likely that there will be a significant number of redundancies in the UK.'
In November last year, the group’s chief executive, Vittorio Colao, said the company would make £1bn savings by 2011. The plans were part of a bid to cut down on the operator's £22bn operating costs.
