Orange UK resists economic downturn

Orange UK revenues rose 6.3% in 2008 to 5.68bn euros (£5.04bn), compared with the same period in 2007, providing further evidence of operators' resilience to the economic downturn. The company reported its results for the year ended December 31 2008 yesterday (4 March).

The network finished the year with 15.995 million customers – 6.17 million pay monthly and 9.82 million pay as you go – up 353,00 on the 2007 figure. Its contract customers represented 38.6% of the customer base at December 31 2008, compared with 35.9% the previous year.

The company added 180,00 contract customers in the last quarter of last year, due to a ‘steady growth’ in contract customers as prepay users took advantage of cheap deals.

Orange finished 2008 with 3.3 million broadband customers, compared with 1.8 million the year before.

Data usage also saw a huge surge in 2008 and now accounts for 24% of Orange UK revenues.
