Online retailer Play.com defies O2 by selling unlocked iPhones

Online retailer Play.com is offering unlocked iPhones with the manufacturer’s warranty for £600, despite having no formal agreement with Apple or O2.

Play’s website said it ran out of stock on Tuesday (24 March) but is offering the 16GB iPhone on its website.

Call centre staff said it had no limits on the number of iPhones one customer could buy, and that it was looking to replenish stock.

It is thought Play.com is sourcing its stock from France, where there is no operator exclusivity on the phone.

O2 declined to comment directly about the online retailer’s offer, which allows customers to take the phone back to a UK Apple store under the warranty.
