Orange reconsidering on-demand TV for broadband

Orange confirmed that it is discussing a potential bid for an on-demand TV service that was supposed to be a collaboration between BBC, ITV and Channel 4.

Project Kangaroo had considerable expectation in the TV industry as a ‘super’ version of BBC’s iPlayer, allowing users to access TV programmes across the main terrestrial TV channels.

Orange is now hoping to pick up the platform for a cut-price as the proposed business fizzled out after the Competition Commission blocked it.

A spokesman for Orange’s parent company, France Telecom, said: ‘We are examining this company and we see that it could be interesting.’

Orange had planned to launch a TV service over the internet for its one million home broadband customers, but that has been ditched to focus on improving service and cost cutting.
