Carphone Warehouse expected to outline demerger plans

Carphone Warehouse expected to outline demerger plans
Carphone Warehouse is expected to announce a demerger of its retail and telecoms business on Wednesday (22 April).

Carphone’s chief executive, Charles Dunstone, said in November 2008 that he would consider a demerger and is expected to outline how it could be done on Wednesday at Carphone’s fourth quarter trading update.

The demerger would see Carphone’s fixed line and broadband offering separated from its mobile retail stores.

Reportedly, investors are pressing the group to separate because they see little logic in a group comprised of both retail and telecoms.

Carphone is reportedly still interested in buying beleaguered broadband provider Tiscali. An informal offer was rejected in last year.

Carphone put its retail assets into a joint venture with US consumer electronics company Best Buy,
in 2008.
