BT launches ‘cheapest mobile broadband’ package

BT is launching what it claims is the cheapest mobile and home broadband package available, at £15.65 a month.

Customers signing up to the new broadband bundle will receive a home connection with speeds of up to 8Mb and a mobile broadband download allowance of 1GB a month at speeds of up to 7.2Mb.

The package costs £7.78 for three months and then £15.65 a month with a one-off charge of £49.99 for the dongle.

The move will strengthen BT’s offering in the face of its competitors.

Orange currently has a combined fixed-mobile broadband offer starting at £20 a month for an 18-month contract. Virgin Media also has combined deals starting at £20 a month.

BT has no mobile network and buys wholesale network time from Vodafone, and some experts were sceptical about the move. Ovum senior analyst, Steven Hartley said: ‘Integration is certainly the way forward for all operators, but we believe that BT’s lack of a mobile network will hinder its commercial prospects.’
