Tesco cementing number two prepay slot and chasing Carphone Warehouse
Argos has been under pressure from Tesco, which has seen its share rise while Argos’ has fallen.
Argos had been close to Carphone Warehouse as the leader in prepay, but Carphone has pulled ahead and currently holds over one quarter of the market, while Argos has fallen away and is now on a par with Tesco.
Tesco aims to open 100 dedicated ‘phone shops’ by March 2010, and to have them in all of the 210 Tesco Extra supermarkets in around two to three
years’ time. The company underlined its ambitions to reach Carphone, Virgin and 3 in a newspaper interview last week.
