Ofcom issues fines of £121,000 for silent calls in 2008
Ofcom issued fines of £121,000 for silent phone calls during 2008, with one company given the maximum penalty of £50,000.
Last year, the regulator started 17 investigations and opened three enforcement programmes for the telecoms industry covering both competition and consumer issues, and fined four companies for silent calls.
Most silent calls are made by machines used in call-centres. Ofcom rules state the number of calls made must not go above a certain number and operators must put safeguards in place, using measures such as pre-recorded messages.
Michelle Mitchell, charity director for Help the Aged and Age Concern, said: ‘Silent calls cause anxiety and distress to those on the receiving end.
‘We are very pleased that Ofcom has taken action to reduce the incidence of these calls and has produced an informative guide telling people how they can complain.’
