Microsoft bans internet calling on Windows Mobile
Microsoft has bowed to operator pressure and banned voice over internet services (VoIP) such as Skype on its Windows Mobile operating system.
The software giant has prohibited the creation of VoIP apps for its new applications marketplace, which will be accessible through Windows 6.5 when it is released later in 2009.
Microsoft announced that it would restrict the service as it laid out other ground rules to developers for its marketplace last week.
The ban comes after a growth in tensions between operators and VoIP providers on the use of the free calling services over 3G networks.
Neil Mawston, of Strategy Analytics, said: ‘Nokia plans to integrate
the Skype application into the address books of several Nseries smartphones; some carriers have been indifferent to this move, but many others appear to be upset and Microsoft seems to have learnt from that experience.’
