Vodafone takes two-tier approach to applications with Android link
Vodafone has developed a two-tier approach to applications by linking its own store with Google’s Android marketplace.
The operator announced its own apps store last week, offering developers the option to stream revenue directly from customers by charging for apps via monthly phone bills.
Vodafone also has the exclusive on the second Google phone, the HTC Magic, which offers access to the Android marketplace.
One industry source said: ‘Vodafone will be able to get a good catalogue due to its vast international outreach.’
Eden Zoller, an analyst at Ovum, said: ‘Vodafone is appealing because of the reach – it is meant to be cross platform.’
Vodafone CEO Vittorio Colao said: ‘Vodafone is initiating these changes to make it easier for third parties to develop attractive new services.’
