Smartphone sales up but overall phone sales down
Smartphone sales grew by 12.7% in the first quarter of this year, while overall mobile phone sales fell by 8.6%, according to research by Gartner.
Over 269 million handsets were sold in the first quarter of this year, according to the analyst group, with smartphone sales surpassing 36.4 million units.
Apple’s iPhone has taken 11% of the smartphone market, while Blackberry increased its share by 6% in quarter one 2008, and now has around 20%.
Nokia was the leading manufacturer – although its market share was down on the same quarter of last year – while Apple has doubled its share from 5.4% to 10.8% in a year.
