Sainsbury’s postpones plans for virtual mobile network by 12 months

Sainsbury’s is understood to have delayed its plans to launch a virtual mobile network by 12 months.

The decision is believed to have been made two months ago, as the supermarket concentrates on bigger priorities amid the downturn in consumer spending.

Sainsbury’s electricals buyer Rob Cooke is understood to have completed his plans and strategy for the virtual network, which was markedly different to that of Tesco and Asda.

Sources have said a launch is still possible within one year, but not for at least six months.

Negotiations over wholesale rates with potential network partners had been completed, and Sainsbury’s was buoyant before Christmas for a major launch at the start of 2009.

Sainsbury’s declined to comment.
