Palm appoints former Apple executive as CEO

Palm has appointed former Apple executive Jon Rubinstein as its new chief executive. Rubinstein will replace Ed Colligan, who had been Palm’s CEO since 2005.

Rubinstein was previously at Apple, where he worked closely with CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs.

As Apple's head of hardware engineering, Rubinstein oversaw the development of the iMac and the iBook, as well as the iPod.

At Palm, Rubinstein has played a central role in developing its newest smartphone, the Pre. He has also restructured Palm's research and development teams.

The Palm Pre (pictured) has a 3.1-inch touch-screen and comes with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It features Palm’s new operating system and has Wi-Fi and built-in navigation. Palm is also planning to launch an app store for the device.
