RIM reports 53% revenue surge for first quarter
BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM) has reported revenues up 53% for the first quarter of 2009, to $3.42bn (£2.08bn).
RIM shipped 7.8 million handsets during the quarter, and the number of BlackBerry subscribers rose to 28.5 million – up by 3.8 million on the same period one year earlier.
Profit rose to $643m (£391m) for the three months to May 30, from $482.5m (£293) one year earlier.
RIM co-chief executive Jim Balsillie said BlackBerry’s success was based on the growth of the smartphone market, and added that four-fifths of the company’s new BlackBerry subscribers were on the consumer side.
