O2’s Palm Pre to take on smartphone incumbents

Palm is confident its O2 exclusivity and unique operating system on the Pre (pictured) will break it into the crowded smartphone market.

O2 and Palm announced the exclusive, multi-country partnership on Tuesday (7 July) for the Palm Pre, which has its own operating system, Web OS. The phone will hit the high street in the run-up to Christmas.

Palm’s Europe, Middle East and Africa VP, Paul Ghent (pictured), said: ‘It is definitely a crowded market, the key is differentiation.’

The manufacturer was coy on UK targets but said it has an ‘agreement’ with O2 over UK sales of the phone.

Meanwhile, O2 said it had partnered Palm in a bid to broaden its smartphone portfolio to become ‘home of the smartphone’.
