Stephen Timms to take charge of Digital Britain plans

Treasury minister Stephen Timms will replace Lord Stephen Carter and take charge of plans for a Digital Britain by 2012.

Timms will remain as financial secretary to the treasury and will report to Lord Mandelson and culture secretary Ben Bradshaw in the new role.

Lord Carter published plans for broadband to be available to everyone in the UK in time for the 2012 Olympics in June this year.

The plans will be implemented through a combination of fixed and mobile services, with mobile the proposed solution to provide remote areas with broadband.

Ofcom is currently carrying out a technical arbitration over the final allocation of spectrum for operators. It will report back to the government in September.
