Ebay sells 65% share of Skype to private investors group
EBay has sold a majority stake of 65% of the VoIP service provider, Skype, to a group of private investors.
According to reports, the price tag of $3.1bn (£1.9bn) is similar to what eBay first paid for the company in 2005.
Private equity firm Silver Lake and two venture capitalist firms, including London-based Index Ventures, are part of the group that has invested in the successful internet start-up company.
Earlier this year, there had been suggestions that eBay might float Skype on the stock market, but after an internal review it was decided that Skype does not fit in with eBay’s main business activities.
