Operators meet Government to discuss Digital Britain plans

Operators met with Digital Britain minister Stephen Timms and secretary of state for business, innovation and skills, Lord Mandelson today (1 September).

It is understood progress was made on the allocation of spectrum debate, which is due to be decided by the end of this week.

Mandelson and Timms emphasised the importance of the mobile networks in ensuring the UK’s digital infrastructure is up to scratch

The Independent Spectrum Broker, Kip Meek, is due to present his proposals for spectrum allocation ‘shortly’.

Negotiations, which have been taking place between operators and the Government since the Digital Britain report in June, have so far been tense.

Discussions have concerned the ‘ratio’ of spectrum allowed to each operator for next generation services. Operators are worried that if this is not done in the right way, 900MHz holders O2 and Vodafone will have a competitive advantage.
