Palm Pre could get early UK launch
The Palm Pre could be launched earlier than planned in the UK to counteract sluggish US sales.
The prediction comes on the back of Palm’s financial results posted last week.
The manufacturer reported better than expected results for the quarter ended 28 August, but predicted that sales and revenue would be down more than 25% for the current period.
However, the predicted drop in US sales contradicts the increase in manufacturing orders. The company said it shipped 823,000 smartphone units during the last quarter, of which only 375,000 were Pre devices, according to US analyst David Eller of TownHall Research.
In a research note, Eller said: ‘Our estimation of sell through at Sprint is no more than 375,000 units, which would leave one month of inventory in the channel.’ He added: ‘We cannot understand where these Pre handsets went.’
Matt Thornton of US analyst Avian told Mobile: ‘The North American market does not warrant that level of production. Given the bigger number, it suggests plans for an earlier launch than November into Europe or into other markets such as Latin America, where Telefónica has a presence.’
Telefónica’s O2 has an exclusive deal to launch the Pre in the UK before Christmas.
