Apple eyes more UK iPhone deals

Apple will cut iPhone deals with other UK operators in the near future, industry experts predicted this week.

Orange’s position as the sole challenger to O2 in the iPhone market will not last for long, analysts say, with some predicting further iPhone deals in time for the Christmas season.

Eddie Murphy, director of management consultancy Priory Consulting Services, told Mobile: ‘If Apple can negotiate a deal with Orange there is no reason why it shouldn’t negotiate with other operators. Now the exclusivity with O2 is gone, it is in their interest to open it up to other operators. What is the point of only having two? It wouldn’t surprise me if there is a succession of deals following this one.’

Geoff Blaber, analyst at CCS Insight, echoed Murphy’s views. He said: ‘From Apple’s perspective, it makes perfect sense to try and open up distribution in every market -the more operators on board the better.’ He added: ‘There could be some interesting moves from operators in the next few weeks.’

The proposed merger between Orange and T-Mobile is expected to bring T-Mobile into the mix quite quickly. Gavin Byrne, telecoms and media analyst at Informa said: ‘There is a possibility that, due to the Orange- T-Mobile tie up, the deal may extend to T-Mobile in the short term. But I don’t think it will extend to the other operators in the short term.’
