Carphone Warehouse reports sales growth in retail and broadband units

Carphone Warehouse has reported sales growth in both its retail and internet units. The retailer and internet provider issued a trading update for Q2 today (8 October).

The company said its retail and distribution business, Best Buy Europe, ‘performed well’ despite a subdued market, due to the iPhone 3G model.

Carphone CEO Charles Dunstone said: ‘Despite an overall subdued handset market and tough year on year comparatives, due to the introduction of the 3G iPhone last July, we grew total connections by 2%.’

The company’s TalkTalk service added a better than expected 77,000 new customers in the second quarter.

During the last two years, Carphone has reshaped its business, spinning off its mobile retail offering into a joint venture with US electronics company Best Buy, while building a fixed-line business, TalkTalk.

The group reiterated that it was on track to demerge TalkTalk and Best Buy by 2010.

Dunstone said: ‘We remain convinced that separating TalkTalk Group and Best Buy Europe will enable the worth and potential of each business to be more appropriately evaluated.

‘We have made marked progress on a number of outstanding issues and we are increasingly confident of achieving the demerger by the end of March next year.’
