LG reports 25% increase in handset sales for Q3

LG has reported a 25% increase in handset sales to KRW 4.38 trillion (£2.28bn) for Q3 2009, compared with the same period in 2008.

Although handset sales were down 10% from Q2 this year, the manufacturer also reported a 21% increase in sales from mobile communications for the third quarter of 2009, to KRW 4.65 trillion (£2.4bn).

Device shipments rose 37% year on year and 6% on Q2 2009, to 31.6 million units. LG said it saw growth in emerging and European markets, due to products such as the Cookie and messaging phones.

However, the operating margin for the division fell to 8.4% from 10.1% a year ago and 10.6% in Q2, due to price erosion and a higher proportion of low-end phones in the sales mix.

The manufacturer forecast seasonal growth for the handset market in Q4, including a rise in its own shipments.

LG now plans to expand investment in smartphones and well as to step up marketing and distribution in emerging markets.
