Dell sets its sights on smartphones
Dell has announced it will sell smartphones equipped with Google’s Android software.
The computer manufacturer will sell its new Mini 3 smartphones through Claro, part of the America Movil network, and China Mobile.
Details on the phones will be announced when the devices are available in stores late in November for China Mobile and around the end of 2009 for Claro, it said.
Dell becomes the latest technology manufacturer to bet on the fast-growing market, following companies such as Acer.
In February, it was rumoured that Dell was set to enter the smartphone market with a touch-screen phone running Android or Windows Mobile.
The Wall Street Journal had speculated that Dell had engineers working on the phones for more than a year from an office in the Chicago area, and that the prototypes had been based on the Android operating system and Windows Mobile.
No plans for the UK market have been revealed as yet.
