3 drafts in global man for senior device role

3 UK has drafted in Nigel Field from its parent, Hutchison Whampoa, in a senior role concentrating on devices on the network.

Field was appointed within the last few weeks, Mobile understands, having previously worked as general manager of global devices and applications at Hutchison Whampoa.

Although his exact job title is not yet known, the internal transfer will see Field focusing on the network’s UK device strategy.

Field has been with the operator since 2007, working as director of operations and vendor management for Hutchison Whampoa prior
to his previous role.

The appointment follows the promotion of former head of devices and director of product management at 3 UK Fergal Walker to director of internet and broadband. He began the new role in April 2009, and is now based in Sweden.

As director of product management, Walker was responsible for a team of over 80 people in a wide range of product areas including handsets.

3 has snared a number of high-end handsets recently, including the HTC Hero and the Sony Ericsson Satio.

Kevin Russell recently outlined plans for the network to add more smartphones to its portfolio at the Westminster eForum.

He also indicated that 3 expected to have the iPhone during the course of 2010.

3 has continued to promote its lower end handsets; it has cut the price of the INQ Mini 3G to £49.99 from £59.99 in a bid to push the device in the run-up to Christmas.

The operator is publicising the handset through a range of initiatives, including in-store promotion and ‘seeding’ INQ handsets to store staff.
