Sony Ericsson drops four sites worldwide to reduce costs
Sony Ericsson is to phase out activities in four worldwide locations as part of its cost reduction programme.
The manufacturer is continuing with its business transformation programme, which it announced in 2008.
Sony Ericsson said its main aim is to return to profitability as soon as possible, and the programme is due to be completed by 2010.
The four sites being phased out are located on the east coast of the US, north Sweden, southern India and in the Netherlands, according to a Sony Ericsson spokesman.
Product development will now be reduced to four sites, on the west coast of the US, southern Sweden, Beijing and Tokyo.
UK operations will not be directly affected by the move.
Sony Ericsson said in April that it planned to slash 2,000 jobs in 2009 after shedding a similar number last year.
