Bernard to lead global marketing drive for Linux operating system Ubuntu

Former Sony Ericsson and LG Mobile marketing chief John Bernard has joined software company Canonical to lead its global marketing drive for Ubuntu, the world’s largest Linux operating system.

Bernard was previously UK marketing director at AVG. Prior to AVG, he was global marketing director at Sony Ericsson and before that, head of marketing at LG Mobile.

Ubuntu 09.10, which was released in October as an alternative to Windows, has an optimised offering as a platform for smaller screens.

It is believed that a number of manufacturers are in talks with Ubuntu about using the platform as a mobile solution. This is supported by an increasing number of network operators looking to deploy open source, such as Vodafone.

Nokia launched Maemo earlier this year, which runs off a similar interface to Ubuntu.

Bernard said: ‘Hardware vendors are looking for a Windows or Symbian alternative that has a true cost advantage.’
