Google Nexus One tipped to launch today

Google is expected to reveal its Nexus One smartphone today at a press briefing at its company headquarters in Silcon Valley.

The touchscreen phone, which Google is hoping will knock the Apple iPhone off its perch, is expected to be sold online, firstly in the US and later in Europe.

HTC will make the phone, which uses Google's Android operating system. However Google has overseen the design of both the hardware and software.

Photos of the Nexus One prototype leaked last year show a tablet with a slightly larger screen than the iPhone. Nexus One users will be able to access the web, play video games and use Google's free GPS navigation software. The smartphone will also have a 5-megapixel camera and wi-fi connectivity.

The Nexus One's unlocked version will allow consumers to choose which operator to use. T-Mobile and Vodafone have been tipped to cut a UK deal for the Nexus One.
