Acer to launch second Android smartphone in Q1

Acer will launch its second Android phone in the UK by the end of this quarter, the IT manufacturer told Mobile this week.

The launch follows hot on the heels of its first Android smartphone - the Liquid - launched in the UK late last month.

Acer plans to launch around six new Android smartphones in the first half of 2010. The move is part of its drive to expand into mobile.  It aims to be one of the top five handset manufacturers within five years.

Julien Bertheuil, Acer's UK business development manager, told Mobile that its decision to manufacture a portfolio of Android phones does not mean it is abandoning Windows Mobile as a platform.

Bertheuil said: ‘We are rebalancing our portfolio which was very Windows Mobile driven last year. We want to develop the equivalent number of Android devices so it is more about raising the number of Android devices than about reducing our involvement in Windows Mobile.’

Last year Acer produced ten handsets of which nine were on Windows Mobile.

The recently launched Liquid sports a 3.5-inch touchscreen with a Qualcomm 8250 Snapdragon chipset inside.
