Tesco Mobile reaches customer base of two million after Christmas sales

Tesco has grown its customer base to over two million as a result of sales in the run-up to Christmas.

One customer activated their Tesco mobile handset every two seconds on Christmas day, the retailer claimed in a trading update released today (12 January).

The supermarket gained access to the iPhone just weeks before Christmas, which it claims created a ‘strong customer demand’ online and in Tesco phone shops.

Sales on other networks were also strong and in the statement Tesco said: ‘A surprise hit for Christmas was the VX1i Party Phone, a credit card sized, Sim-free mini mobile that sold thousands of units a week in the run-up to Christmas, as consumers stocked up for a party accessory.’

Tesco Telecoms stores also performed well, with telecoms accessories up 19% year on year.

The retailer sold 5,000 dongles and 10,000 memory cards in the week before Christmas.

Over the next year, the supermarket retailer hopes to open another 100 phone shops, which would bring the total to 200.
