Carphone Warehouse ups forecast after strong third quarter

Carphone Warehouse has reported that full-year earnings would be at the top end of its forecast range after a good third quarter at both its retail and telecoms arms.

Like for like revenues at its retail joint venture with US electricals group Best Buy rose 5.5% in the three months to31 December, beating analysts' forecasts.

It raised guidance for the share of net income for the period from between £30m and £40m to £40m to £45m.

Carphone CEO Charles Dunstone said: ‘The UK performed particularly well, with continued market share gains in the high-end smartphone category.’

The company’s TalkTalk business added a net 36,000 customers – above the forecast rise of 14,000. The company attributed the rise to sponsorship of ITV’s The X-Factor.

It said an increase in broadband customers was boosted by its takeover of Tiscali’s UK operations.

TalkTalk, which Carphone hopes to spin off by the end of March, now has 4.5 million customers.
