Nokia’s move to update its navigation services is the
first sign of its vision for location based services becoming a reality,
according to UK MD Mark Loughran.
The manufacturer took on Google and Apple, as well as
sat nav company, TomTom, when it launched its updated and free navigation
service yesterday (21 January).
The service was made possible through Nokia’s
acquisition of navigation company Navteq, in 2007.
In an interview with Mobile
yesterday, Loughran said: ‘We have to go back a bit in time – we said a couple
of years ago that location based services was where we were going to be.
He added: ‘We bought Navteq and now we can turn it
into the service we have today. I think our strategy has been clear. ‘It sets the
bar at a very different level. Our strategy is about people, places and
contextually aware services. This is the next step’
version of Ovi Maps includes high-end car and pedestrian navigation features,
such as turn-by-turn voice guidance for 74 countries, in 46 languages, and
traffic information for more than 10 countries, as well as detailed maps for
more than 180 countries.
