3 has set 10 October 2010 as a target date for completing network improvements that will see a total of 12,855 mast sites.

3 chief technology officer Graham Baxter laid out the plans at a round table event in London this week. The network currently has 10,000 masts.

The operator confirmed it is to increase its smartphone efforts. 3 CEO Kevin Russell said: 'I think Android is important.'

Russell also emphasised the importance of mobile internet and added: 'Internet take-up on devices continues to explode and it's not just the iPhone - there is a mass understanding now.'
