Sixteen million access mobile internet in December 2009

Almost 16 million people in the UK accessed the internet from their handsets in December 2009, according to figures from the GSMA.

The GSMA Mobile Media Metrics (MMM) service was launched in the UK last week, conducted by comScore in partnership with O2, Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and 3.

The service takes anonymous mobile internet usage data from the big five UK networks to provide insights into mobile media consumption.

A combined total of 6.7 billion pages were viewed in December, the data showed, with 4.8 billion minutes spent online.

The top 10 sites accounted for 70% of both total pages viewed and total time spent online on mobiles during the month.

Smartphone users accounted for 47% of total page views and 51% of the total time spent online in December last year.
