Microsoft eyes RIM, say sources

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer may be interested in purchasing BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, according to an online report.

The All Things Digital blog reports that Ballmer has expressed interest in buying RIM many times’ but has dismissed any interest in Palm. These claims come from Microsoft sources, says the blog.

All may become clearer at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week where Ballmer is expected to present Microsoft’s presentation of the renamed Windows Phone operating system. Microsoft entertainment and devices head Robbie Bach said the upgraded OS platform will ‘move the bar forward.’

Industry analysts say Microsoft needs a brand to corner the smartphone market if it is to keep up with market leaders Apple, Nokia and RIM. Microsoft's options include launching its own branded phone, as Google did recently with the Nexus One, or  taking over a well known manufacturer such as Palm or RIM.
