Get Connected raises £150,000 at mobile charity auction

Get Connected’s annual charity auction raised £150,000 on Wednesday thanks to the generosity of senior mobile industry figures. The event, now in its sixth year and once again supported by Carphone Warehouse, provides funds for Get Connected’s free, national helpline for young people.

Bidding for the lots, all donated by organisations in the mobile industry, continued until midnight, with Gary Murphy of Allsop & Co in charge of the action.

The biggest bid of the night was for Lot 10, a package to see and meet Pixie Lott on tour courtesy of Carphone Warehouse. It was the subject of feverish bidding and eventually went for a whopping £21,000.

A number of other items, such as an exclusive box for 24 people to see Rihanna at the O2 arena donated by O2, also produced some lively bidding, adroitly, if a little mischievously, egged on in particular by Andrew Harrison, Carphone’s chief executive, and Jacqueline Cooper, VP of channel at RIM.

Our top lots included two tickets to the Superbowl in the USA courtesy of Motorola; a round of golf for four at Woburn Golf Club donated by Celaton; two tickets to an England group match at the World Cup, courtesy of Sony Ericsson; and your product placed in a Get Connected national marketing campaign.

The evening kicked off with an introduction by Charles Dunstone, chairman of Get Connected and CEO of Carphone Warehouse (pictured above) who said that the two organisations had been working in partnership for nearly 10 years now.

He added: ‘I’d like to thank everyone involved for their generous lot donations, bids and support for the event. Get Connected has an exciting vision for the next five years. The funds received will further help it raise much needed awareness among young people of the vital service it provides.’

Get Connected is a free, confidential helpline service providing emotional support and practical signposting information to young people under 25 in the UK. Its chief executive, Fiona Clark, told attendees: ‘I want Get Connected to be the Google of help lines and we want to grow the organisation so that we can help 100,000 young people a year. This event provides key funding for us, allowing us to connect even more young people to the help they need in 2010.’

The charity’s aim is to be the first port of call for young people with problems, who don’t know where to turn for help. The charity’s 120 volunteers provide support and direct individuals to the most appropriate help point for their problem.

Get Connected was set up in 1999 and has helped almost 100,000 individuals over the last 10 years. It depends entirely on voluntary donations. All calls to the charity are provided free by UK network operators.

Carphone Warehouse has supported the organisation since 2001, providing free offices, communication equipment and bills, IT equipment and support, stationary and utilities. It also promotes the helpline through its network of contacts and has contributed almost £90,000 through its handset recycling scheme, among other activities.
