O2: HP will give Palm investment and scale
O2, Palm's only operator partner in the UK market, says the HP buy-out will boost the struggling manufacturer's investment and scale in mobile.
In a blog on O2's website, general manger of devices Steve Alder said the move is 'very good news' and reiterated the position O2 took when it first partnered with Palm, saying the webOS platform is 'innovative'.
He said: 'With HP's backing the webOS platform is likely to get a real boost in investment and scale. Although HP haven't announced specifically what products we can expect to see webOS used in, they have called it an ideal platform and we look forward to seeing all the new and exciting devices that will emerge from this deal.'
Alder's blog goes on to say: 'By being part of HP, Palm has the chance to become an even stronger player in what is a very competitive market.'
O2 started selling the Palm Pre smartphone last December, alongside a huge marketing campaign, with sales staff emphasising the webOS's ability to multi-task on the handset.
Alder added: 'When we first announced our exclusive relationship to sell the Palm Pre we talked about how exciting the webOS platform was and how it was a breakthrough in bringing information from lots of different places together.'
