Orange in smart metering talks with National Grid
Orange is in discussions with National Grid on its plans to provide a smart meter service to UK energy companies.
National Grid’s gas and electricity metering business, OnStream, is to launch a trial of its smart meters in 2,000 households in partnership
with nPower and Scottish and Southern Electricity next month.
Further trials planned at nPower could see it fitted in more than 14,000 homes by the end of the year.
An Orange spokeswoman said: ‘We can’t say anything specific on the trial but we are in discussions with the National Grid and OnStream, and we are looking to do more in the smart meter sector.’
The smart meter is the first to contain a roaming Sim, enabling it to pick up the strongest nearby mobile network to transmit its information from any location.
Scottish and Southern Energy and nPower have yet to identify the networks they will use in the trial.
Under the Government’s mandatory smart metering programme, 28 million UK homes will be fitted with smart meters by 2020.
