England fans in 1.5 million SMS frenzy after Gerrard’s goal against USA

Never mind betting on the number of goals scored during the World Cup, try betting on the number of mobile text messages sent after each one. Mobile has teamed up with billmonitor.com to bring you the SMS results of each England game. The graphic above tracks the SMSs sent and phone calls made during the game by England fans.

According to billmonitor.com, a new service that helps UK consumers to find the right mobile phone contract, England fans sent nearly 1.5 million mobile text messages to each other in the seconds after Steven Gerrard scored England’s opener against the USA. And 1.2 million text messages were sent after the USA equalised following Robert Green’s calamitous mistake.

In total over 20 million messages were sent across the UK - at an estimated cost of nearly £2 million - in a little over two hours following kick off , as England’s footballers made a less than impressive start to their bid for World Cup glory.

And during the whole of Saturday, over 105 million SMSs were keyed into mobiles (66% higher than normal for a Saturday) as England’s legion of fans finalised details of where they were going to watch the match.

But significantly, 30% less mobile phone calls were made during the day of the match than on a typical Saturday – perhaps an indication of the futility of trying to hear someone in a raucous pub.

Stelios Koundouros, founder and Director of billmonitor.com, said: ‘This is the first time that any company has been able to track mobile phone use in real time. I am excited to see how Britons automatically reach for their mobiles at times of national joy or disappointment. Should England have won or lost we would have expected an even stronger reaction.’
