Fujitsu and Toshiba merge mobile phone divisions

Fujitsu and Toshiba have sealed a deal to merge their mobile phone businesses.

The deal sees Toshiba transfer its mobile phone business to a new company to be established at the beginning of October this year. Fujitsu will acquire a majority of the shares in the company.

In a statement, Fujitsu and Toshiba said they aim to be ‘the No. 1 provider’ of mobile phones in Japan and  use their combined resources to launch a major drive into the overseas market.

The statement said: ‘Both Fujitsu and Toshiba are market leaders in designing compact, highly functional handsets. This competitive advantage will be leveraged to develop highly competitive next-generation handsets for the expanding smartphone market.’

It went on: ‘Through continuous innovation, Fujitsu and Toshiba will collaborate to develop new handsets for markets in and outside Japan.’

The deal will be finalized by the end of July 2010.
