Tesco mobile phone store managers are putting themselves forward for Mobile's Store Manager of the Year competition for the first time this year. The move is another first for the company, following the entry of Tesco staff in Mobile’s Shop Idol 2010 competition earlier this year.
The appearance of Tesco staff reflects the supermarket giant’s increasing confidence and presence on the high street, which is seeing it become a real challenger to the traditional chains in mobile phone retailing.
Tesco Telecoms chief, Lance Batchelor, outlined the company’s hugely ambitious plans in the pages of Mobile earlier this year (30 April 2010). Batchelor said the company plans to open a Tesco ‘Phone Shop’ on every high street.
Tesco already has over 100 Phone Shops in the UK and is looking to open three phone stores a week to deliver at least 100 a year. It has a target of around 500 shops by the end of 2013. Its MVNO, Tesco Mobile, now has more than two million customers.
The supermarket is widening its range of handsets and is already offering very competitive prices for top range phones such as the iPhone. It is seen as being a real threat to existing retailers, especially Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4u.
