Shebang tasked with growing Asda’s high-end pay-as-you-go share

Asda has tasked Shebang with growing its high-end pay-as-you-go share after the launch of two trial Asda ‘Phone Shops’ on 22 September.

Shebang will oversee the retailer’s ‘mobile centres’, with eight Shebang staff – comprising retail staff, sales coaches and sales experts – going into the two Asda stores.

Shebang general manager Julian Burton told Mobile that the distributor will supply Asda with contract handsets and accessories. Asda has tasked Shebang with growing its category over pay-as-you-go in the high-end, using Shebang’s Sellfone EPOS security system on its tills.

Shebang’s deal with Asda has a different approach to Tesco commercially, as the partnership ‘is across the board’, Burton said.

He added: ‘Asda have a genuinely joined up [strategy] and want to work across the board in the partnership.’

‘What we also always maintained was that we wanted value in this sort of long-term project,’ Burton said.

Asda’s first trial phone shop concession will open in its Manchester Eastlands store.

It will be the first of 150 mobile concessions planned within the next two years, if the proposition is successful.

Last week, Mobile exclusively revealed that Asda would launch its own phone shops to rival Tesco, after its deal with Orange ended last month.

Asda will now range all of the operators and its MVNO Asda Mobile.

Mobiletoday.co.uk revealed yesterday that Asda had inked a deal with Shebang to run the centres.
