Talkmobile launches ‘Essentials’ tariff and 12 month contracts

Carphone MVNO Talkmobile has launched 'the best value pay-as-you-go tariff in the UK', called Essentials.

The move is the MVNO’s first since consolidating with Carphone’s other MVNO, Fresh.

Talkmobile director Paul Layte said: ‘Our research has shown that a third of mobile phone users in the UK are looking for clear and simple tariff pricing when considering which product to buy.

‘Talkmobile Essentials offers customers unbeatable value calls and texts with no hidden catches at a time when keeping in touch and managing a tight budget are really important to many people.’

Customers can pick up a Talkmobile SIM card for £10, which includes £10 of credit.

Meanwhile, Carphone Warehouse is now offering 12 month Talkmobile contracts, ‘bucking the trend of increasingly longer deals’ that tie in customers for 24 months. The pay monthly tariffs are available at £15 per month or £20 per month depending on usage.

Carphone’s move follows its rival Tesco, which also launched 12 month contracts last month.

Layte told Mobile: ‘We had 12 month contracts ready at the same time as Tesco. Both us and them agree on the need for shorter term contracts – a significant number of customers want to be on 12 month contracts.

‘In the next six months we will see affordable smartphones prices. We could offer 12 months on any tariffs and we may expand beyond that.’
