3 to invest £8.5m on network in Leeds and Edinburgh
Mobile operator 3 has announced it will be investing £4.5m on its Leeds network and a further £4m on its network in Edinburgh.
The announcements coincide with the 3 mobile broadband bus touring the country in a drive to show the benefits of mobile broadband.
The 3 mobile broadband bus has already been to Leeds and Edinburgh and will be going to Glasgow, Manchester, London and Birmingham in its next stops across the UK.
The operator has also given its backing to the Government supported scheme Race Online 2012. The scheme aims to get 100,000 people connected to the internet for the first time by 2012.
3 director of products and services Charlotte Blanchard said: ‘We believe it is a misconception that everyone is online and knows how to make the most of being connected to the internet.’
The 3 mobile broadband bus is going to areas where there are low connectivity levels. Figures show that 30% of homes in Leeds do not have internet access, while Scotland has the lowest level of broadband ownership in the country at 61%, compared with 71% across the rest of the country.
As part of the national tour, Pollyanna Woodward from Channel Five’s The Gadget Show joined the bus in Leeds and Edinburgh.
She said: ‘Three has really shaken up the mobile market. As the UK’s biggest 3G network, it allows more people to get connected in more places and with a faster mobile internet connection. 3's network investment in Leeds gives locals better coverage and a better experience, which we’ll demonstrate today.’
