RIM handset shipments up 45% to 12 million
RIM shipped 12.1 million handsets during the second quarter ended August 31 2010, up 45% on the same period last year. To date, the company has shipped approximately 115 million smartphones.
Revenue for Q2 was $4.6bn, up 31% from $3.53bn in the same quarter of last year. Revenue breakdown was 79% devices, 17% service, 1% software and 3% other revenue.
Around 4.5 million subscriber accounts were added in the quarter. At the end of the quarter, the total BlackBerry subscriber account base was 50 million.
BlackBerry is available from approximately 565 carriers and distribution partners in 175 countries around the world.
The manufacturer said revenue for the third quarter of the fiscal 2011 ended November 27, 2010 is expected to be in the range of $5.30bn to $5.55bn. RIM expects to add 5.0 to 5.4 million net new subscriber accounts and ship between 13.8 to 14.4 million BlackBerry smartphones in Q3.
