An ever-present at the top end of the Power 50, Phones 4u’s chief commercial officer continues to be lauded for a sharp commercial mind and collegiate approach to working with partners. One trade expert summed up the feelings of many when he said: ‘Scott has taken Phones 4u from a poor second place to the vendors’ phone specialist of choice. Phones 4u are tough people to deal with, but always fair. Scott has created a really dynamic team and pulled off some really amazing deals.’
Hooton has helped the retailer secure a number of device exclusives, from the full colour portfolio of the Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 handsets to the white version of BlackBerry’s Z10 flagship device. It has thrown its weight behind Windows Phone 8 with a series of in-store workshops. The retailer’s chief commercial officer has further driven concessions into Currys and PC World, with almost 160 trading in the UK at the end of 2012. Sales have surged by around 50% within these store within store formats, as Phones 4u continues to chase the Holy Grail of the converged devices market. Under Hooton’s stewardship, it might well reach it.
One expert said: ‘Scott has turned Phones 4u into a mature player. He has brought in people with market insight, changing the way Phones 4u staff are incentivised and how they behave in store, moving them more towards a customer management role rather than that of a traditional sales consultant.’
