I won Store Manager of the Year 2012 in November last year and the months since then have gone by in a whirlwind.
The confidence boost from winning the competition was just incredible. I went on a funded course after winning to learn more about sales development and in February was one of the top 20 managers within Three retail.
Above: Jo lives it up in Thailand
As an incentive, I, two of my assistant sales managers and my top sales staff were sent on an all-inclusive six days long trip to Koh Samui and Thailand. We also got to watch the Malaysian Grand Prix in March!
The high of being widely recognised within the company is massive and I wanted to pass on some of the skills I had gained to my local community and hired three sales associates who were out of employment previously on 20 hrs/week contracts. They are all doing exceptionally well and I feel incredibly proud of them.
One of my staff members has now gone on to work in marketing at the Three retail headquarters, which was another very proud moment for me.
I had initially thought there was no way I would win SMOTY 2012, but after winning it and all the recognition I have achieved on the back of it, I would recommend all store managers to apply. It seems unreal when I think back about the time Three retail wanted to close the store down just before I took it over in June 2012.
I love Store Manager of the Year competition and if given an opportunity, I would go for it again. The competition isn’t just about being popular, but also about showing what you have in you and what you are able to achieve.
